The College Equips Students for Professional Success through Targeted Career Workshops

The Oman College of Management and Technology (OCMT), through its Career Training and Guidance Office, recently held a series of workshops designed to enhance students' readiness for the professional world. These workshops, held from October 27 to October 29, 2024, addressed diverse career preparation topics, from self-presentation skills to understanding sector-specific career pathways in IT, finance, and design. Each session featured expert-led presentations, interactive exercises, and personalized feedback to ensure students gained practical knowledge applicable to their chosen fields.


On Sunday, October 27, OCMT hosted the “Emerging Technologies & Career Opportunities in IT” workshop, led by Dr. Virendra Gawande, an esteemed Information Technology expert. This session focused on preparing students for the rapidly evolving tech landscape, equipping them with insights into emerging technologies and high-demand skills. Dr. Gawande emphasized understanding current trends, identifying promising career paths, and strategically building relevant IT competencies. The interactive component allowed students to discuss real-world applications of technologies and receive tailored guidance on their career goals.


The following day, on October 28, students interested in creative fields attended the “Building a Design Portfolio for Success” workshop with Ms. Basma Salama, a well-regarded design expert. The workshop provided invaluable guidance on assembling a visually compelling design portfolio. Ms. Salama highlighted effective project selection, presentation techniques, and adherence to industry standards. Attendees engaged in practical activities to create and refine their portfolios, receiving constructive feedback on how to enhance their work for potential employers.


Tuesday, October 29, featured two key workshops. In the morning, Dr. Amar Al-Mansour, a finance professional, led the “Financial Career Pathways: Job Roles & Opportunities” session, offering a comprehensive look into career options within the financial sector. Dr. Al-Mansour covered essential aspects of finance careers, including job roles, skill requirements, and industry-specific challenges. The session's interactive segment allowed students to explore real-world applications of finance principles and devise a strategic career plan aligned with market demands.


Later that day, Dr. Sara Ahmed Mohamed conducted the “How to Pitch Yourself to an Employer” workshop. This workshop equipped students with vital self-presentation skills for interviews, emphasizing impactful introductions, confidence-building, and effective communication tailored to employer expectations. Participants practiced their personal pitches, receiving invaluable feedback from Dr. Mohamed, which enhanced their interview readiness.


Each workshop successfully advanced OCMT’s mission to support students’ career development and readiness by fostering practical skills, critical thinking, and strategic career planning. These


targeted sessions empowered students to engage with their career paths thoughtfully and proactively, preparing them to stand out in the competitive job market.
